"Gitanes" Original Lithograph by Alterio Ruben, 1991
An original lithograph poster by Brazilian born French artist Alterio Ruben titled "Gitanes - Hommage a Max Ponty", 1991. Signed in the plate by Ruben lower right. Gitanes is a French cigarette company which published original lithograph posters by renown artists from around the world during the 20th century. Size: 39" x 30.25". Mint condition.
Printed in 1990, it was part of a series printed in honor of Max Ponty, the most famous designer of Gitanes cigarette posters. The series consisted of 45 artists, considered to be the top 45 living poster artists in the world at that time, who reinterpreted the classic Gitanes design of the Spanish dancer against a billow of smoke.
Born in Buenos Aires Ruben Alterio entered at the age of 13 the Buenos Aires School of Fine Arts. Following a brief period in Brazil, he established his studio in Paris in 1973 and has since dedicated himself entirely to his artwork. His work spans a range of genres and forms of artistic expression, having collaborated with the happenings of the performance group Urban Sax and participated in productions at the Powder Theatre. He has also created the décor and costumes for both Nicolas Le Riche’s B.R.V coreography and Marie-Claude Pietragalla’s ballet Don Quixote, as well as illustrated editions dedicated to the shows of Alfredo Arias. Described by one critic as the embodiment of Baudelaire’s 'Painter of Modern Life’, noted by another for the theatricality that exudes from his canvasses and for the way in which he inscribes the gesture involved in the thick brush strokes into his work, Alterio remains unwavering in his passion for painting and sketching. He exhibits on a regular basis in Europe, North and South America and the Middle East. His works form part of many public and private collections.
