"Gathering Lotus Flowers" by Michael Knigin, Serigraph, 1979
Part of his Japanese Suite, American artist Michael Knigin uses imagery from the Japanese printmaker Harunobu, with modern photography in this serigraph from 1979. In the foreground, two women in traditional kimonos gather lotus blossoms. Behind them is a black and white view of Manhattan, with the Chrysler building tower in sight. With this combination, Knigin makes it appear as if the women are in the Hudson River. In one scene, he brings together both Eastern and Western art, color and gray scale, as well as the classical and modern. Working in a surrealist/Pop art style, Knigin (1942-2011) often incorporated photographic elements into his compositions, resulting in unique graphics. Signed and numbered in pencil, edition: AP. It is offered unframed.
